250g vs 1kg Coffee Beans: Which Should You Buy?

The right bag size comes down to how quickly you get through your coffee, not just the price per kilo.

By Bondi Press ·

How much coffee do you drink?

A typical espresso uses around 18 grams of coffee. One 250g bag gives roughly 13 to 14 double shots, and a 1kg bag gives around 55. If you make one coffee a day, 250g lasts about two weeks and 1kg lasts about two months.

Freshness matters more than size

Coffee tastes best in the weeks after roasting. A bag you finish in two to three weeks will usually taste better than a bag that sits open for two months, even if the bigger bag looks cheaper per kilo. If you are not sure, start with 250g.

When 1kg makes sense

A 1kg bag suits households that drink several coffees a day, offices, and anyone who keeps a favourite blend on rotation. Larger bags usually cost less per kilo. To keep a big bag fresh, decant part of it into a smaller airtight container and keep the rest sealed.

When 250g is the better choice

Choose 250g when you are trying a new coffee, you drink a mix of espresso and filter, or you only have one or two cups a day. You can try several coffees without any of them going stale.
